Description

The design for this project solved a problem that the client had when she wanted to place a colorful mosaic mural against her neighbor’s garage wall that was right on the property line and very close to her kitchen side patio. Luckily, the patio was already covered with overhead beams, so that the two companion panels could hang side by side from chains.

In general, when Kim Emerson first meets a client for a commission she likes to ask them, “who is your favorite artist and/or what is your favorite work of art?” This client absolutely loved Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss”, and so it was decided that the figures would not be included for a side patio from off the kitchen, but rather the composition would draw upon the mosaic-like patterns that Klimt was inspired to paint after his visits to Ravenna, Italy, at the turn of the 20th Century. The client chose her own favorite colors from the pallet of available smalti glass. The abstract geometric shapes, flowers and spirals were the inspiration for the overall design that appears to flow in and out, and from one panel to the other.
