Description

This project was the first of a now well established and deeply rooted tradition of mosaic artists giving back to the communities where they hold their annual conferences. In 2007, Kim Emerson was approached by board of trustees representing the non-profit organization, Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA), with a pitch for the artist to design, orchestrate, and execute with members the first project of its kind – and Kim said yes!

That year, the conference was held in Mesa, AZ and the Mosaic Marathon activity was launched offering eager SAMA conference attendees the opportunity to work together during the conference, around the clock for consecutive days, and make something truly special as an offering to a well deserving non-profit organization.

Every year since, and now with other mosaic artist groups around the USA and abroad, this community mosaic project has become a tradition and beloved activity that highlights being together, bounded by the love of our medium of mosaic art – thus celebrating the cement of our humanity. Kim Emerson is extremely pleased and proud to be the first artist to be invited in establishing this legacy that keeps on giving to each community where mosaic artists may visit. And, it should be known that all efforts to make this and all the projects possible are on a volunteer basis. In addition, all materials for the projects are donated to the cause. It is certainly an exciting time in history to give from the heart and be a mosaic artist!
