Las Tuxtlas, Veracruz, Mexico
It all started with a Fulbright-Hayes Group grant through the Socios Unidos Para Artes via Educacion (SUAVE) to Veracruz, Mexico. A delegation of artists and teachers brought Kim Emerson to Veracruz to share, explore, and learn about the arts and education. Each member of the delegation was asked to share a project with schools and/or communities in Mexico. Kim brought with her rolled canvas pastels and paint. The first mural was created with members of the community in Santiago Tuxtla during the celebration of their annual music festival. The painting now hangs in the City Hall of Santiago Tuxtla. The second mural was created in San Andres as a gift for La Casa de Cultura during Kim’s second visit with children from an orphanage for the annual “encuentro” of the musical tradition called “son jarocho”. The third mural was created with the same “ninos de la calle” at La Casa de Cultura in San Andres depicting the theme of the folktales about the “Chaneques” or fairies of the jungle. Since the first visit to Las Tuxtlas, Kim has become a strong participant in dance, jarana playing and singing son jarocho music.
